Okay, here's the thing. I want to like this book. I really really really want to like this book. However, it's turning out to not be much better than a Bendis book. Even the length of time it takes to read it seems like his work and the character development isn't up to his standard. I just finished reading the latest issue and can sum up my reaction in 2 words - "Who cares?"
Spoiler Alert
This is my attempt at summing up the plot:
Shang-Chi, a character from the 70s that held no interest for me then and still doesn't now, fought some people. It turns out that, for some reason, he is in contact with Steve Rogers. There is some sort of "Eye of the dragon" thing missing. Steve, Shang-Chi, and the Black Widow went after it but it was a set-up by Shang-Chi's father, whoever he is. I suppose if I were a Shang-Chi fan this would make more sense and I might even be excited about the return (I think) of his father but I'm not and why should I be? I thought this book was about the Avengers.
There are cameos by Ant-man and the Beast and a mention of Valkyrie. I guess this is to remind us that this is a team book but it hasn't felt like one since day one. The whole team has never been in one place at the same time. Following the outer space story that I never really got, I expected the "Team" to regroup and emerge with some kind of focus. Are War-Machine and Moon Knight even still a part of this? I guess Nova isn't since he isn't even mentioned on the splash page. It seems that each issue has little to nothing to do with the previous one (Which was basically a Nick Fury story) and even less to do with the members of the team.
I may give the book one or two more tries but it looks like it's going to end up being removed from my very short list just like most of the other Avengers books.
I will conclude with this- Thank goodness for "Avengers Academy." It's the only Avengers book I look forward to and it is actually darn good.
