You know, I agree with the "It's only a matter of time until he's resurrected" EXPECIALLY with the 50th anniversary coming through this year. I'd have thought with the Reed death in the 90s, the "Death of the Invisible Woman" two years ago(?) we'd had our time of this on the book. Sure, I'll pick it up (and the finale) just because it might be decent, but I figure the countdown to his return's already in the books.
Though I was really looking forward to hoping She-Hulk would have come back to the book and kept the "FF" going.
Consider me first in line though for the "Baxter Building Avengers" where Herbie meets Jarvis.

I noticed in some of the comments that the Torch was never a fan favorite among this assemblage. However, I have to say, he's always been in my top 10 favorite characters.
That said, what a sad statement it is regarding the state of comics today that I just read that they killed off one of my favorite characters today and yet, I really don't care. I wasn't buying the book anyway, probably won't buy the death issue, and won't bother to miss the character because we already know he'll be back before you know it. If this had happened in decades past, I would have cared.

I didn't think I would care so much but I found myself crying as I read the last several pages of the story. The Ben-Johnny interaction was perfectly depicted, very true to both characters. August of this year (someone above has mentioned) marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of the FF. Is it even remotely possible that Johnny won't miraculously return at that very moment? Yeah, I'd mentioned August as being a prime time to unleash an anniversary issue, since it was back in August 1961 when FF #1 debuted, cover-dated November 1961. But now the cover and release dates don't follow this same schedule, so I guess the real celebration will be reserved for the November cover-dated issue (or whatever issue displays November 2011 in the indicia), regardless of actual month of release. Anyway, whatever FF-filler series they produce in the meantime, I'll bet that they revert to the old numbering just in time to commemorate the 600th issue--and it would be great if the 600th issue was the November 2011 issue! I think they'd have to publish two issues in some months to achieve this synchronicity though. As for Johnny returning around that time, it's possible (and expected), but Hickman may just be the type to thwart our expectations and not have him come back then.

Okay, now what's scary is that "Herbie Meets Jarvis" would really be very funny, and I could see it working in the context of the Marvel U! Heck, I found myself really enjoying the "Aunt May in Avengers Mansion/Budding Romance w/ Jarvis" subplot right before BND. I couldn't foresee any great way to resolve a lot of what was going on at that point (and boy was I right), but I enjoyed it in its own moment, and thought it was being handled very sweetly. Hey, am I the ONLY person who remembers that Ben got killed too, just a few short years ago?? I mean, pronounced DEAD at the scene-- although darned if I can remember the circumstances. A piece of his hide right over his heart got blown clean off. And there was a multi-issue arc of Reed figuring out via scientific equipment how to, literally, trace Ben's soul to the gates of Heaven, and convince him to come back. Man-- I think Jack Kirby was sort of represented as God, in fact. CLEARLY a landmark event, eh? HB

Man-- I think Jack Kirby was sort of represented as God, in fact. CLEARLY a landmark event, eh? Coincidentally, when I got back into comics a few years ago and was buying old comics by the dozens from online vendors, I actually received a free copy of FF#511 with one of my orders (because I spent over a certain amount, I assume). FF#511 was the concluding chapter of "Hereafter", which is the arc you're referring to. This was pretty much the first new FF comic I'd seen in what, 35 years (my last issue was #116) and I was astonished that the characters were basically the same as ever. Plus the great appearance by Jack Kirby! I was shocked--after all those years, to see Kirby in a comic again (just like the old days when he and Stan would pop up ina few issues). What a great tribute to the King by Waid and the late Mike Wieringo. Anyway, the fact that Ben had "died" so recently was a big tip-off to fans (at least, if you go by various message boards) that he wouldn't be the one offed in #587--at least, if you go by various message boards. Not to mention Ben's announced participation in the forthcoming Fear Itself limited series. And take a second look at that panel in #574 in which future Franklin speaks of remembering the dead--who's that in the lower left, hmmm? Hickman has been laying the groundwork for some time. Anyway, I think #587 was great--very touching, and its events are obviously part of a larger story. I'm going to note the following as SPOILERS in case anyone anyone has not read #587 and plans to do so. SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS We don't actually see Johnny die. And isn't Lyja somewhere in the Negative Zone?

I. . . I just can't believe this. I have been subscribed to the FF since the middle of John Byrne's run, and had bought it pretty regularly for years before that-- I have probably better than 90% of their original issues. This may be what makes me stop buying it. After decades. . . decades! There's just so much here to not like. Putting Spiderman on the team is a "bold new direction"- I'm sorry, "bold, new direction" is now synonymous w/ "blatant, shameless sales-pandering"--?? I assume, of course, that Wolverine will be one of those other guest-members they hint at. I mean, could any direction be more bold than that? Yes, the uniforms are awful-- I completely agree. Ben in particular looks like he's wearing underwear. Why pull Spidey out of his iconic outfit, exactly? And it's not even a good one-- it's just. . . different from his other two. That cover art is quite, quite awful. Reed looks like The Rock, and Sue looks she just stepped by after a "Barely Legal" photo-shoot. I just find it creepy. The figures generally look like they're rendered badly but shaded and colored well, which kind of masks it. At least Steve Epting will still be handling the interior art. But Spiderman? Really? The ONLY way that it can be justified is if they somehow use this whole "change the Marvel Universe" tack as a means to reverse the Brand New Day disaster--- THEN I could find some forgiveness here. But I don't even begin to hold out any hope for that kind of fair play. Ugh. My beloved lifetime hobby dies by a few degrees every day. . . HB

HB You're not alone HB.....I'm actually not a very picky person.....but the current state of comics makes it hard for me to enjoy 98% of what Marvel and DC are producing. My current favorite---the Marvel Previews monthly solicitation. I love checking out the covers, but I've found it's not worth actually spending money on the books. Thankfully, there's the Avengers cartoon.

It's gotten to the point that, as a comic book fan, you either have to laugh or cry. I'm choosing to laugh. This is exactly the kind of "Bold new direction" most of us might have come up with in 5th grade. Picture it. Kid 1: "Wouldn't it be cool if Spider-man joined the Fantastic Four?" Kid 2: "But then it would be the Fantastic Five" Kid 1: "Not if he replaces somebody." Kid 2: "How could that happen?" Kid 1: "I know, we'll kill off somebody." Kid 2: "And then Spidey can be on the team instead. But who do we kill?" Kid 1: "I know. Johnny Storm is like totally his best friend. What if it's him?" Kid 2: "Oh Dude. Nobody would see that coming. That's awesome." Kid 1: "Do you think we change their uniforms too?" Kid 2: "Sure. Why not?" Kid 1: "We'll get that kid in art class to draw them for us." Kid 2: "The one that did that rocking picture of The Rock." Kid 1: "Yeah, I'll bet he could do an awesome Reed Richards." Kid 2: "We're brilliant. This'll sell like a million gazillion books."

I'm staying out of this debate, I am not going anywhere near it.
I'm just staying with the comics of today that I read.
