Been trying to figure out who was actually worth reading at Marvel these days and saw Dan Slott's name on a bunch of stuff. I've read and quite enjoyed a couple of She Hulk issues but thats it really.
I saw that he had done some fairly recent Avengers stuff and a Spider-man/Human Torch thing that looked right up my alley.
Anyone able to fill me in on whether he is any good?
also any other names I wouldn't recognise who have done fun stuff?
i wasn't really a Bendis fan when I stopped reading comics, I liked Powers and the first 10 or so issues of Ultimate Spider-Man but didn't like much else and found him quite rude about some reviewers i used to keep in touch with so I doubt if i'll be trying his Avengers stuff.

His Avengers staff is a bit hit and miss, but the Spider-Man/Human Torch mini is very good. There are summaries and reviews on Spiderfan www.spiderfan.org/comics/title/spiderman_human_torch.htmlOther modern writers... I like Christopher Yost on Red Robin and Brian Reed on ASM, but I don't know how modern they are... they may have done tons of work I can't remember right now, as I don't always pay attention to the writer's name.

Having just read volumes I & II of EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES last night & today (sort of a Father's Day present to myself), I'm going to go right ahead and say that Joe Casey is my favorite current writer. Mind you, I have no idea if he's writing anything else at present-- but if he's not writing an Avengers title or about to be writing one, then there has been a seriously gross misjudgment in the editorial stables at Marvel. It has been a long, long time since I've enjoyed & appreciated a series this much. This is a writer who a) understands that subtle verbal, grammatical, and syntactical shadings can be used to GREAT effect to define a character, set the scene, and drive a plot realistically and seamlessly; and, b) KNOWS HIS AVENGERS HISTORY! And knows it intimately! Literally, has a complete command of moment-to-moment events, and is able to enhance them with what happened in the preceding or proceding moments that we didn't see. Wow, get this guy onto a main title if he's not already. . .

I'm waiting for the trade, so I haven't read any of these issues yet (three have been published so far); but from what I understand, the action in this miniseries occurs prior to the events in Earth's Mightiest Heroes v. 1. Should be interesting.
