First off if Goldenfist wants to do a review please do, just wanted to write a few thoughts on how much i enjoyed this comic.
SPOILERS !!!
We start off with with a roxxon exec taking two women to his room for a private party , this quickly turns badly as Val cannot keep her cool and Black widow the other female operative has to blow their cover to get val out of trouble...a great fight quickly starts and soon smashing through a window is...steve himself!!
The fight ends and they pick up what appears to be a serpent crown, Steve commends his crew and we soon meet his tech support Beast and War Machine.
Steve then has a nice scene with sharon who is basically the teams handler and sharon refers to steve as "commander rogers"
Next up is Moon Knight and ant-man (Eric o grady) a flashback follows explaining their recruitment, it seems roxxon has or had a base on mars and something fishy is going on...so Steve comments ok I'll have someone check it out..a great moment here is Rhodey asking you have someone on this team who can just check out mars for us?
of course i do...what kind of operation did you think i was running rhodey?
throughout the issue there are little scenes with the villains a covert group called the shadow council tracking the SA movements etc.
There is a nice team meeting where Steve explains the mission statement basically a proactive avengers stopping problems before they start.
They're going to mars on a rescue mission its seems steve's operative has lost contact with him and then there is a flashback to Nova on mars, rich is being attacked by highly advanced old tech..apparently it predates the celestials and he's having trouble with it...soo he burrows into a tunnel and finds what appears to be a true serpent crown..its soon apparent rich is being influenced as his drops his nova helmet and his connection to worldmind.
Finally we have Steve checking in with sharon there's a nice little you be careful back and forth between them, sharon notices someone has infiltrated their ship a kinda mini helicarrier, she gets knocked out..i won't spoil by whom but its an old friend of Steve and sharons.
and that's it...in a word WOW !!!
tons of story here..yet at a breakneck pace this feels like the avengers ..at times i was reminded of alias JJ abrams old spy show with jenifer garner and other times i thought i was reading classic avengers.
Everybody has thier own voice and for the most part they are spot on, the Steve and sharon moments are great and yes brubaker shows us once more he does know how to write steve.
The art is very good..i am not a big deadato fan yet it all looks nice, all in all a great comic bring it on i eagerly await issue #2.
;D ;D ;D

Nice review , nova.
I also loved #1. I t had an "Ultimates" feel to it, but not so much realism-- alot of suspended disbelief, but hey, it's a freakin' comic book, and it was very FUN to read.
I liked Deodato's work here, the dark tones fitting to the espionage theme. And his facial expressions were appropriate, something that has been frustrating the heck out of me with the "Avengers" artists of late.
Another part i really liked was the love story dynamic with Steve and Sharon. Brubaker writes this nicely.....it just feels like a comic book relationship--something Bendis does very poorly, IMO. I almost understand BMB trying to "update" the MU with baby-mama drama, modern slang and such---but (and here i'm sounding like a little girl) i always preferred the hokey, mushy stuff for my comic book romances. The "old school" way of writing romances had endured for many years, and some things just don't need an "update", IMO.
I also liked how Cap/Steve seemed to have a Rolodex of super -heroes to handle any situation---this is a great concept that seems to have been underused---or impossible to achieve in the recent Marvel Universe. Cap has all this great history with the MU, let's see some crazy team-up action! Please!
And a personal highlight was the location of Roxxon Headquarters---Wilmington, Delaware--where i was born and raised! The cityscape shot was actually very realistic to what you see driving on I-95 thru Wilmington "a place to be somebody"---or in MoonKnight and Ant-man's case "a place to beat somebody".
My only complaint would be the Beast's butt-ugly threads.
Can't wait for next ish!

Finally it arrived in the mail today! And, hey, it was just fine. I'll go along with giving Deodato a thumbs-up on the art. Really, I've always kind of liked him-- it's just funny how his stylistic "look" has been so wildly varied over the years. I wouldn't connect this work to his THOR work several years ago at all. But I like both.
Lots of nice touches--- folks speaking and behaving in the parameters of their expected characters--- many nods & references to conventional, accepted Marvel continuity.
Now, the team itself at this point? Well, they're new & willing for the most part-- and while generally familiar with each other, there aren't any close bonds or ties just yet (Cap/Widow certainly have the most professional history in common). But this isn't a bad thing. It strikes me as being exactly the same as a first cast-meeting/read-through of a play, when most of the cast hasn't worked together much before. Folks are on their best behavior & are eager to please-- but they still need to get down to working hard together, taking risks, and finding their interpersonal chemistry before they can rise to the greater demands of the task at hand.

I absolutely loved it! Loved the interplay between Valkyrie and Black Widow. "I don't even want to know where you were hiding that sword!" LOL!!! Also: Brubakker, I think, made a very wise move in showing the Valkyrie feeling discomfort at being "pawed at" by a man--that was very much her character when she first appeared and was exciting. IMO the Valkyrie is a great character but should have stayed closer to her original handling when she appeared in the Defenders. Well, that was actually the second time she appeared, but who's counting?
On the art front: AMAZING. That one shot of Ant-man flying upwards showed such grace--no stiffness whatsoever.
And FINALLY--lots of ACTION!!! It's about time!

I'm onboard with this one too. I thought it was good. The characters felt like the characters and seem to have been chosen because of what each one can bring to the team and the book rather because their names will just increase sales.
Secret Avengers, Avengers Academy, Hawkeye and Mockingbird - I haven't been this excited about comics in years. It feels good.

No harm done and the two do have so much in common: 1) Both their names start with B 2) Never mind, that's all I've got.

Actually, I just wasn't aware that Brubaker was writing SA, and what with all these Avengers teams running around, I went and got SA confused with NA... . But then it serves me right for trying to be a smarta-- without having my facts straight and ending up being a dumba-- instead... . ;D

Waspie LOLLLL! That was a bold and incisive comparison/contrast of the two writers! I came to the same conclusion!
Bongsy--No harm done, if you don't count the incalculable damage to poor Brubaker's reputation. Let's hope of bevy of Brubaker's lawyers aren't swooping in for the kill!
HB--I restrained myself. I will go to my grave swearing I never hit the smite button on our beloved Dr Bongsy! He is right--you can go to the comic store and see 500 different Avengers titles right now so it is easy to get confused. After all, I, myself recently purchased a Bendis Avengers title a few weeks ago. I flogged myself mercilessly with a tender young sapling in penance!! The Pope is still demanding an audience with me--or was that an exorcism? I must pay and pay dearly.

I won't buy anything Bendis does anymore, and it's been very satisfying. And now with Secret Avengers and Academy (which i picked up but haven't read yet), and also the Thanos/Guardians stuff, I also have a brighter outlook about Marvel, in general. It DOES feel good.
I also picked up the new Marvel Spotlight featuring the Avengers, and it's really good. I usually wait until these are in the dollar bins, but i had to grab this one, and it's fun, alot of lists and the classic corner head-shots.
