I love Spidey interacting with the Avengers (and FF, too). It makes sense, too, since he's all over New York. I love most of the old team-ups, and even the brief stint (c. 310's, I think) as a member.
The thing about Spidey being a full-timer that doesn't work for me is.......
Peter has soooooo many things to hide from Aunt May, and his co-workers, etc. etc... Being at the beck-and-call of the world's biggest super-team would just be too much. I know I haven't been keeping up with Spidey's life in about 20 years, but the Spidey I remember worked much better as a team-up, rather than a full-timer.
Wolverine is an X-man, or X-whatever. There are several X-men I would love to see as Avengers, but Wolvie, Cyclops, and Jean are X-people ONLY! (IMO, of course.)

She has faith in Pete to do right as Spider Man, and she has a certain grace in not being anxious and letting Pete tell her on his own when he's ready. Cyclops would be one of the weirdest to see as an Avenger for me. Colossus is someone I'd like to see as an Avenger again. His first stint was too short.

Wait a minute. Colossus was an Avenger? I remember him and Storm being members in a weird, Kang-future story, is that what you're referring to, betaraybill?

I've stated elsewhere around here -- I always that Havok and Polaris would have made interesting additions to the Avengers.

Wolverine is an X-man, or X-whatever. There are several X-men I would love to see as Avengers, but Wolvie, Cyclops, and Jean are X-people ONLY! (IMO, of course.) I only sort of agree with you here, because I think that if you're looking just at the characters themselves, Cyclops would fit in very well with the classic Avenger mentality. For me, what makes a good Avenger is based on, for lack of a better term, their morality. The characters in X-Men who fit the Avenger mold the best are, in my opinion, Cyclops, Kitty Pryde and Nightcrawler. These are characters who have a strong moral viewpoint (Kitty Pryde especially). They aren't loose cannons, they don't overreact, rather they tend towards moderation and consideration before action. Cyclops to me is a straight-laced guy like Cap or Quasar. Having said that, I don't think Cyclops could actually work on the Avengers at this point (and by Avengers I mean the classic idea of Avengers, if that were being published today). Though I haven't read X-Men closely in 15 years, as the head of Xavier's School he's far to vital to the X-Universe and would not, I think, ever abandon that responsibility. In the real world, he's become too ingrained in readers minds as an X-character for people to buy him as an Avenger (just like most older Avengers fans can't buy Wolverine as an Avenger, though this is also because of his character type, which sharply contrasts with the ideas I laid out already). I think Cyclops could have been a very nice Avenger, though, had he joined the team back when the X-Men were without a book and were doing guest shots in other people's books. The X-Men appeared in Avengers #110-111 during this time, when Englehart was also randomly adding people like Black Widow, who didn't actually serve on the team even though she joined, along with Mantis and Swordsman. If Cyclops had joined the Avengers at this point, when the X-Men were basically broken up and doing their own thing, he could have worked. I think Kitty or Nightcrawler could work today, though. Speaking of which: I shouldn't reveal my plans for Avengers when I become the new writer on the 1st of next Never, but there's a character who I would add who combines both Nightcrawler's powers and Valkyrie's powers and appeal: Sif. One of the big issues with Thor over the years is that he's just kind of too powerful for a lot of situations, which has led writers to write him out or be very careful using him; plus since he has his own book you can't do much with him as a character. Further, he's now lord of Asgard so he really has too many responsibilities to be a full time Avenger. Yet he still feels a kinship with the team and a responsibility to protect Midgard. So I think it would make sense for him to designate one of his warriors as a stand in for him, to fight with the Avengers as a representative of Asgard in his place. Maybe someone who has from time to time shown the same kind of contempt and disdain towards mortals that he once showed and is in need of learning a lesson. It's not used a whole lot, but Sif's sword is imbued with magical powers, so that when she waves it around in a certain pattern it teleports her (and people with her) wherever she wants to go. From a powers standpoint it would be a unique addition to the Avengers and she's also a trained warrior with super strength and toughness, but without being overpowering like Thor. She'd be a different personality and she's quite easy on the eyes; I would tend towards using the Simonson red and white outfit, though maybe a new costume would be needed if she joined the team. It might be interesting to pair her with She-Hulk, who has similar powers (other than the sword thing) but a completely different personality. And hell, while we're at it we could have her start a romance with (the real, original) Vision, who I think would be very appealing to her in the same way that she once showed interest in Beta Ray Bill.

Ohh, this is serendipity. I think I may have mentioned Sif in that very post that that first quote was pulled from. And Shiryu & I have been discussing her (touching on her disdain of mortals) in a thread elsewhere. I think having her and Jen on the same team would create an enjoyable dynamic VERY similar to the Namor/Hercules one. Especially if "mortal" Jen were able to show Sif up a time or two. Somehow, though, I don't think it would resolve as nicely as the boys' version did. Man, there's lots of good story ideas flyin' around these boards.

Oh yeah, for some reason I didn't see your original mention of Sif, only the Valkyrie suggestion, but we must be operating on similar wavelengths. For the reasons I mentioned before I think a different Asgardian would make more sense and be more interesting in many ways than Thor. My first thought was Balder, as he has a very Avengery feel, but in terms of personality, appearance and her teleportation power, Sif would be a lot more interesting to me.
Of course, I don't know what is in store for Sif over in the pages of Thor, but at this pace I'm sure we'll find out around the year 2018.
