I just saw an article on the Major Spoilers site about Avengers Academy #7---The return of Giant-Man (in the red and antennae costume, to boot!) . I'm pretty excited to see that, I hope Gage comes up with something interesting. If this were Facebook, I'd be clicking the like button right now.

Wow, and it's specifically Giant-Man, eh? I wonder if it will indeed be Hank in the costume? Oh please let him not be the Wasp anymore-- even the other characters have been written as finding this creepy-! I mean, come on. . . But of course, there's a long, storied precedent of Hank's identities and powers being adopted by other folks, so I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case here. In fact, maybe one of the students? Hey-- maybe this creates a glimmer of hope that we'll be getting Jan back before too long? That would be great, too. I think the practical, brutal reality is that these companies are all but legally obligated to keep a "Name" alive, just to keep it out of the clutches of a rival company. I'm not sure why copywrite laws don't seem to protect that, though. But I distinctly remember talk back in the late 70's/early 80's about this being the reason why they kept letting Fred Hembeck pull the much-reviled Brother Voodoo back from limbo-- 'cause it kept the name/character active within a certain amount of time, and therefore un-swipable. Mind you, this could all just be conspiracy-theory fantasy. . . HB

Wow, and it's specifically Giant-Man, eh? I wonder if it will indeed be Hank in the costume? It's probably Hank (he's a regular in Avengers Academy, after all) --but you know, I had a glimmer of hope that this Giant-Man might be (a resurrected) Bill Foster. A look at the covers for AA #7 dashed that hope. And of course I absolutely, positively ♥ the (variant) cover on the right, by Ed McGuinness.

This took me awhile to sit down & look at more closely, Shar-- but I got it--! And now I, of course, get why you're particularly fond of it. . . I, too, liked the Ed McG cover-- it really caught my eye, and looked incredibly familiar at the same time. I'm thinking, "this is an iconic pose, but I can't quite remember this one specifically for Giant-Man". Aaaaaand I was right-- the cover is really a dead-on (an uncharitable person might say "Buckler-esque" ) homage to the cover of issue #63-- which is the issue where Clint takes on the powers and mantle of. . . Goliath. ("And In This Corner, Goliath") And whom is the artist? Why, it looks to be none other than Sharkar's most-favoritist-- Gene Colan! He had a brief, but great, three-issue run at that point. And so is solved the Case of the Uncredited Homage. . . HB PS-- Shar, might you be so kind as to post both covers, for the jury to refer to? I'll be in my study. . . . . . playing my violin. . . . . . and brooding. . .

LOL! I had a sneaking suspicion you'd figure out why I professed so much undying love for this particular cover, HB--so a no prize (in the form of an exalt) is coming your way! ...PS-- Shar, might you be so kind as to post both covers, for the jury to refer to? I'll be in my study. . . . . . playing my violin. . . . . . and brooding. . . Put away your Strad, HB--here you go: Love the peripheral characters on both covers! You know, I can take or leave most current covers, but I always get a thrill when I see a reworking of an old cover or famous scene.

Will friendship bloom or will fists fly when this year’s Avengers Academy students meet the kids who didn’t make the cut?! 32 PGS./Rated A ...$2.99 i.newsarama.com/images/avnacapo014_cvr_02.jpgJust a quick (?) review of these two issues....I FINALLY got some free time this July 4th weekend and read some comics. First, #14.1 (I hate these stupid .1 issues, BTW) Chen's art is very good, his faces and poses seem (dare I say) Kirby-esque, IMO. I got excited when I heard the "other" super-kids considered for the Academy were to be introduced. What's the "Steve" characters code-name. By the looks of his costume, it might be Snowflake. The Alchemist seems like he could become an arch-nemesis for the Academy. Kind of has a Lex Luthor, corporate-scumbag-type thing going on. But he's one of those "matter-changing" power-types that drive me crazy (like Sersi or Crystal). How powerful can this guy be? Seems like he could do just about whatever he wanted with this power, pretty unbeatable, IMO. This story was just OK for me. The end seemed abrupt. And the letter column (After School Special---weak name)... It's nice to hear from Christos Gage. Kind of a throwback to the old-school letter pages, makes you feel involved in the MU. And Gage even mentions issue #21 .....nice to know he'll be around for a while ;D. #15----- Well, I hate the "Fear Itself" banner, and it kills the cover, which doesn't look that great anyway. That being said, I really like Tom raney's interior art, and the colors are amazing. My only complaint is some of Raney's facial expressions are weird, esp. Tigra and Hank Pym's (weird, wrinkly sad face). Also, the "Fear Itself" tie-in seems to kill the momentum Gage has had on this book. The writing seems stagnant, as if stalling the plotlines interuppted by Fear Itself. "They're ready,....They're not ready yet....blah-blah-blah.....C'mon, they fought frickin' KORVAC! and plenty of heavy hitters so far. Duh. I truly feel bad for the few writers I like when they have to include the "mega-event" in their stories. But i still like the inclusion of the letters page....even though Gage ignores the kid's question about Hank/Tigra in bed together. Anyway, still a fun book to read, I compare it to another current "fun" title(s), Levitz' Legion of SuperHeroes, and Adventure Comics...featuring Legion "Academy". Thanks for keeping my interest alive, Christos.
