Here's a review of Avengers: The Initiative #16 from Ign.com
Avengers: The Initiative has always been at its best when Dan Slott and Christos Gage are able to roll around happily in the mud of Marvel's backwaters, doing so with equal parts reverence and satire. It's an attractive mix that's been a bit lost in the past few months. But that's come to an end as the third part of the book's Secret Invasion tie-in manages to be one of the best issues of the entire series.
3-D Man is still the center square here, but boy are things different around A: TI. The traditional (if unoriginal) Skrully suspicions and whatnot that are going on in most other Marvel titles has given way to 3-D Man hooking up with the Skrull Kill Krew, deciding to purify the bad seeds in the Initiative teams, one state at a time. The only thing anyone ever seems to remember about the Kill Krew is that their miniseries was written by Grant Morrison and Mark Millar. Fortunately, Slott and Gage were counting on that, and their M.O. and origin is detailed with the same tongue-in-cheek respect you'd rely on A: TI to give.
A heartening aspect of the issue is its inclusion of the initial class of recruits from the beginning issues. When they were carted off to parts unknown awhile back, I was worried they'd be relegated to limbo, but thankfully that's not the case. A: TI is building its own sense of continuity rather nicely and using it to tell fantastic stories. Thankfully Stefano Caselli is back on art, which equates to all being right in the A: TI world.
To be honest, if they decided to spin off the Skrull Kill Crew into a separate title featuring 3-D Man and Komodo and call it Skrull *#@%-ers as this issue suggests, I'd be the first in line to buy a copy. At this point, I have such faith in Slott and Gage's leadership on the title that I'm willing bite anything they're dangling in front of me. Certainly one of the better SI tie-ins, by far.
Review Score: 8.6 Great
