Is it impossible to put these two glitches aside and enjoy the book in spite of them? Well, there’s also the glitch that supposedly protecting May’s real identity and connection with Spider-Man is Mary Jane—an undisguised gorgeous redheaded world-famous supermodel and actress known to be the wife of Spider-Man…and the glitch that Peter seems to have forgotten that the reason he stopped wearing the black costume was that it was indirectly a source of trauma for his wife…

Can we at least agree it's better than "Well gosh darnit my uniform is torn, hey Tony you wouldn't happen to have a spare giant red-and-gold suit, would you?"

Yes, we most certainly can agree on that...

In this week’s New Joe Fridays #42, JMS addresses a reader question about the reason Peter had shelved the black costume: I think JMS is backpedaling. One could argue that the message to Mary Jane is what Peter was referring to, but that sounds disingenuous.

that bit about him being discreet,.. wha?!?
Spidey is always on camera. He almost always change whrn hr gets home. What's he gonna do, change into blue+red before he gets home?
C'mon, rather than making lame attempts at excuses I'd rather they just stand up and say "We have made this decision, we stand by it, this is the way WE'RE gonna run it"

Who knows, may be MJ will leave Peter after she sees him in black costume one time too many (JQ mentioned half a dozen times he wants Peter to be wifeless for the moment). Personally, I would expect that after having been attacked at one time or another by monsters of any type, she would ignore the costume and feel happy that her husband is there.

It's possible he has discussed the matter with her, although one would prefer to see such a discussion on panel, as it is a characterization element and those should ideally be handled on panel. It's certainly possible that if May dies and Peter goes all strange in the head over it, Mary Jane will leave him. Heck, with the folks running Marvel now, it's possible they'll have a huge argument over it and Peter will accidentally kill her! Think of the self-hatred they could generate from that. And then they could write Spidey transferring his own guilt to Tony, and Spider-Man can go from being a hero to being the headline villain of Iron Man! He could even team up with the Mandarin and... >CLANG!< "Pardon me, sir, but you specifically left instructions that if you starting typing like that, I was to use the frying pan." "Yes, yes I did. And thanks." Nevermind.

WHAT? BALOK? ARE YOU SUGGESTING THAT NU MARVEL ARE GOING SO FAR AS TO ACTUALLY HAVE SPIDER-MAN FEEL GUILT AND ANGST! ? This is MADNESS! Spider-Man has NEVER, EVER incorporated these elemens! The death of his loved ones due to actions he took is an INSANE notion TOTALLY originated by the scum who run Marvel nowadays!

Well it's been some months and the story is all but over. ASM 543 is the technical end of the story but really the climax was in 542. It's possible JMS still has a twist left for us, he almost certainly does, but this issue gave us what we all wanted: Kingpin vs Spidey.
And d**n it was good. This is... okay, this is my favourite issue of Spidey, I want to say in a long time. But the problem is, the title has SUCH a high quality that that's difficult- let's say, since last summer. The point is, it's a brilliant issue.
Kingpin is his usual malicious, sadistic self. Then Spidey makes a pretty chilling statement of intent. And then they fight. And Spider-Man completely beats the crap out of him. Fisk can;t even lay a hand on a Spidey who pounds on him and pounds on him and pounds on him and then leaves him, broken and unable to get up, leaves Fisk knowing his reputation has been destroyed and his own death may shortly follow. It was fantastically written, rbilliantly drawn and the anger radiating from Peter was incredible. Better yet, it actually wraps up the arc (Kinda) in a plausible way without "tarnishing" the character (Having him kill) OR taking away from his cold fury.
9.25/10, brilliant stuff.
