Much thanks for handling this for us this year, John! My choices didn't do too well, but my favorite Avenger got both Villain of the Year and #2 Avenger of the Year. How often will that happen??! What a crazy year..... (And congrats to Jim Cheung!! Very well deserved!!)

Let's see... I voted the winner for Story, writer, Avenger, villain and one of the creators, Bushema. The tie in for artist, moment (perhaps, I voted when Spidey leaves Cap's shield), panel and series. Pity my second for the Hall of Fame, Roger Stern, didn't win. Hopefully better luck next time

Thanks again, JZ! Ed Brubaker’s Captain America run dominated a lot of the categories, sometimes pummeling my choices. I’m curious about the winner of the Greatest Avengers “Moment” award: “Captain America tells the Winter Soldier, ‘Remember who you are.’ ( Captain America #14)”. I haven’t read the run, and so I’m wondering if someone could explain this winner. I know the broad strokes of the Winter Soldier story (mysterious Soviet/Russian assassin turns out to be Cap’s WW II partner Bucky Barnes, cyborgized, brainwashed, kept in stasis between assignments; his conditioning broken, the Soldier leaves his servitude but has emotional issues to work out, preventing him from renewing a close friendship with Cap), but I’m wondering if someone would be so kind as to more specifically explain this particular “moment” and its impact. Most of my nominees were on the final ballot, and my final votes fairly closely mirrored my nominations. However, I made a big switch in the Hall of Fame category, changing both of my votes to the persons who turned out to be the winners, even though both of my nominees were on the ballot. I still like my original nominees (Stern and Kirby), as well as the fifth choice (Shooter); but I wanted to contribute to a decisive victory, and I thought the electorate was tending toward Englehart and Buscema. I wonder: as the field of major Avengers creators not yet elected to the Hall of Fame grows smaller, will the choices grow easier? or harder?

I wonder: as the field of major Avengers creators not yet elected to the Hall of Fame grows smaller, will the choices grow easier? or harder? Good question. I think if we stick to two creators per year going in, we have quite a while before we would need to get nervous. Thought: since many of the categories we voted on contained an "Avengers-related" bent, might the Hall of Fame eventually go that way? For example, Sal Buscema is certainly responsible for some good Avengers stories (intro. of the Invaders, part of the Kree/Skrull story, part of the Celestial Madonna story), but not nearly AS MANY as a John Buscema, George Perez, Tom Palmer, etc. Does Sal's work on Incredible Hulk and Captain America get him in?

I think if we stick to two creators per year going in, we have quite a while before we would need to get nervous. Well, I’m not sure. This year we had five nominees. I felt all of them were worthy candidates, and I suspect that my feelings are generally shared. But there was some argument about which two deserved to be inducted first. As the biggest names get inducted, it might be harder for us to agree on which of the remaining luminaries should be next. And some of those remaining names might stir up some controversy or apathy (John Byrne comes to mind). My feeling is that Hall of Fame status should be reserved for persons working on comics centered on the Avengers team itself—so, for instance, if you’re blown away by the awesomeness that is Dan Slott’s She-Hulk, you still shouldn’t nominate him for the Avengers Creator Hall of Fame, since he hasn’t worked on an actual Avengers title (yet). However, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with letting work on strongly Avengers-related series help bolster a vote—for instance, if you think Jack Kirby’s Avengers art was fantastic and you let your admiration for his Captain America work help break a tie in your voting decision, I think that’s legitimate. On the other hand, I feel it might be contrary to the spirit of the Hall of Fame if, for example, you voted for Walt Simonson despite not caring for his Avengers issues, because you really grok his Thor.

Valid points. In the case of the aforementioned Sal B., I think he did enough to eventually at least gain nomination in his own Avenging right; his Avengers-related works might be what could put him over the top.
Boy, as good as John Byrne was on the Nefaria and Wundagore stories, that mess he made of the Vision will surely polarize some fans.

The Vision and, to a lesser extent, the Scarlet Witch (both in West Coast, natch). In my opinion, his writing on Avengers proper about that same time is somewhat lackluster and could therefore also hurt his case—apathy, this time, as opposed to controversy.

Though pleased to See Cap honoured, I feel it's outrageous that the top hero of the year won "Avengers villain." For one thing, he's the hero of the story with Cap as antagonist and for another he's the one with the real team of Avengers! If I recall correctly, Cap leads a vagabond team of whoever he can find NICKNAMED the Secret Avengers but which he calls the Avengers.
It's Iron Man who leads the real Avengers right now.

Surely you've seen me posting around a bit lately, phantom! My leave of absence was cut much shorter than I thought, and for that I am glad since it allows me to spend more time debating my fellow merry assemblers. ...But it was no satire. I've made clear from the start that I'm on Iron Man's side and with some of the more recent issues in particular it's not as difficult as some would claim. That said, I'll take the karma point

It's about time to start gearing up for the awards again! As usual, I'll spend most of my time debating the Hall of Fame candidates.
For those of us who don't read new comics all that much, can we get a new category for Best Avengers Material Re-presented in 2007?
