Well, it's not the first time writers have thrown someone who's a questionable fit onto the team. They've been doing it off and on since Stan added Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and the Scarlet Witch (and Hawkeye was a major pain and loose cannon, back then). Sometimes doing that works (Those three, the Swordsman, She-Hulk, Spider-Man), sometimes not (Moondragon, Dr. Druid, Gilgamesh), and sometimes, well, it ends up not meaning much at all (Tigra, Starfox, Sub-Mariner). That's all we're seeing here with Ares, really.
And, it could be worse. Ultron, in her current incarnation, could always try to reform, with Jan having to deal with this naked and violent lookalike on the team...
Jan: Um, we try to subdue the big monsters, not destroy them.
Ultron: (pouts)
Simon: Y'know, Jan, Ultron looking like you and pouting cutely is... disturbing.
Jan: Tell me aout it...

Assuming that Ulton can basically shape-shift now, if he/she/it joined the team would it decide to become "anatomically correct?" Would it want or need to wear a costume? Would it put the mack on Jan? And what do you call a lesbian Oedipal complex? RSC

Well, it'd still be Oedipal, since Hank's still Dad.
Hank: d**n you, Ultron, and your gender issues! And put some clothes on!
Ultron: You just don't understand me!
Vision: As if I didn't have enough trauma...

I've been looking through the past issues to find some justification for Ares being on the team. Something that would make him even care about being a good Avenger.
I found it (eureka!)
Issue 384.
Hera has the team at her mercy and is about to kill them all off. All of the sudden Zeus is there and whups her fanny. How did Zeus know he was needed? Ares tattled, and he says "I would do anything to restore myself to my father's good graces"
See, along with it not making sense to me why the Avengers would want him. I also did not understand why he would want to be an Avenger.
Now I can justify it. All my life I wanted to make my dad proud. I don't think I ever did, but oh well, that's for my therapist. I would do ANYTHING to do so. Ares would too. He knows tht his father saw the heroism in Hercules and Ares probably associates this with the Avengers. So while he is trying to make a good life for his son, I think he is also trying to make an impression on his poppa. Which means he would probably make a decent effort at the job.
Well, I feel better.

nope, not overlooking that at all. I believe it can be applied that he is STILL acting out of that exact same pure self-interest. Which actually keeps him in character.

reading those old Avengers issues where Stan would let the readers explain why things happened which seemed out of sync in the stories had me thinking. Rather than me complaining about things like Ares (which I was) why not try to formulate some reason that it makes sense. To me this does. Maybe not to you, but to me. Not that it matters because there are still other problems that I can't look past. But it makes me happier with Ares. Now on to the meaning of life.

With Bendis on Mighty Avengers there's no way he'll get taken off.
