If every comic book Bendis wrote was like this one, I would be a Bendis fan. (Well, sort of.) Great issue. Great use of thought balloons! Very effective in their laying out of the below-the-surface side of the conversations. And there was actual, honest-to-Stan-Lee FIGHTIN'!!!! My word! Was this really a modern Marvel comic book? ?? On the other hand, why does Cho have to give EVERY woman in his books a gigantic butt? Carol and Natasha, maybe.... but JAN?! My gosh, how would he draw Wanda, then, if she stood next to Jan?

I enjoyed this issue quite a bit. I posted my thoughts on it elsewhere, but I can't seem to remember where . . .

S P O I L E R Ultron being one of my favorite baddies, I love it when he/she shows up in any forms. To everyone who was saying Iron Man is a villian,... well now there's no argument. Just not the villian we thought. I was a little concerned with the power level of this new team, but throwing them up against Ultron, that's a great start. Only issue I have is this. Marvel Girl as the leader? You know with IM on the team that's like being the head coach of the Cowboys. You wont br able to keep the team owner from taking the lead.

Read it, and overall I liked it. The thought baloons were interesting, even though I still think there is too much text in some panels, but I appreciated the comments to some recent things we've seen (Sentry being useless in CW, Wolverine kind of being the wrong choice for an Avengers, Thor highlighted as the best Avenger etc), and of course I'm happy that they looked mostly among members to make up the new roster. The fight was nothing important, but at least it was there, and usually issues #1 don't involve big battles.

I just re-read the issue and I realized something.
The IM armor, toward the end, we assume it's Ultron that's interfering with the IM systems. But that's not what happened.
He loaded Windows Vista, that's what happened.

My review for this issue is in another thread, but I there is something bugging me that no one seems to be talking about...
WTF happened to Tony? Was it Tony at all through this issue? If that was Tony, is he now a part of Ulton that can be extracted at some point? Uhhhh... so wtf, mate?

If that was Tony, is he now a part of Ulton that can be extracted at some point? Uhhhh... so wtf, mate? Two possibilities: 1)Assuming that Tony's body cannot be warped into a pretzel, the "Iron Man" we see in MA #1 is really Ultron all along just shape-shifted into Iron Man, ala the liquid-metal Terminator from Terminator 2. 2)Assuming that Bendis has declared that Tony's body can be warped into a pretzel, it's him all along until he becomes "infected" with Ultron. Then Ultron takes over and warps Tony's body and the IM suit into a big-breasted metal babe. RSC

well, I think it might have something to do with his complete connection with all computer information. It might be possible that Ultro has downloaded Tony into some kind of storage using his connection to , everything.
But I may be wrong,... he makes a hot chick tho'
Is it possible that Tanoy's new girlfriend from extremis was in the armor?

You're assuming Tony was ever IN the armor. It's possible he was operating it remotely from elsewhere, something Extremis lets him do easily. Remember that there's a four day difference between the team building scenes and the scenes where the MA were battling Mole Man's creatures.
I will say that this issue was a lot better than I ever thought it would be (I read a friend's copy - at least I didn't spend any money one it).
PROS: The team selection panels worked well. They justified the member's selection adequately or better in every case. Especially well justified were Tony's desire for the Sentry. The interaction between Tony and Carol worked well, including his field deferral to her leadership. The fight was well scripted.
NEUTRALS: Thought balloons didn't add to the story, but didn't really subtract from it, either.
CONS: Don't like the portrayal of Tony as an authoritarian, petty jerk. Don't think Ares is a good choice for an Avenger. Don't like the Sentry, and this issue did nothing to change that view. Not a fan of Cho's art. Not a fan of the reimagined Ultron. Ultron works best as what he is, a clearly robotic, evil looking character. Is Tony afraid of SHIELD, the organization that he (theoretically) runs? It seems so, but why? Bendis keeps waving the idea of a rotten SHIELD around but never really takes it farther.
Overall, this gets 5/10 from me.

Thing is though, Tony is getting to be pretty domineering. He is still high on his control rush and his new position with SHIELD is just another inflating to his head.
I hadn't thought he wouldn't be in the armor, even though, like you said he can operate it R.C. That is probably the direction they will go in.
As far as Ares goes. I agree with you for reasons listed inother posts.

SHIELD still has some corrupt elements in it, being controled by a possibly outside force. Part of Tony's "100 Ideas" is to shake loose those corrupt elements. ~W~

I just hope, like others have pointed out, that they come back and tie up those particular loose ends. We need to see some resolution with the entire SHIELD and Nick Fury angles.

It's going to be the central plot point to "New Avengers" and, eventually, "Mighty Avengers." The whole SHIELD/Fury subplot ties in with Hydra and the Hand -- hence why we're seeing ninjas. ~W~

I didn't like it. I thought it was weirdly out of character. Iron man particularly came off as a bipolar lech, objectifying his female teammates and gave pretty high praise to Simon who wasn't as great an Avenger as he is made out to be here. And Ares doesn't even have a probationary period? You know just in case the God of War is you know, feeling nasty? It'd be pretty easy for him to just axe a couple of people in the back during that melee. I can't imagine no one considers it and I have to imagine it would be distracting. (or at least a good plot point by God) I know other villains have been given a shot, however I have to think the Swordsman-- whose power is he has a sword-- isn't as great a threat to be concerned over compared to a nigh immortal Greek god who has endangered numerous women and children to get back at Hercules (gold star if you remember the issue where Ares takes over Thunderstrike and endangers an entire CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, nearly directly murdering a young boy-you'd think a Civil War could've started over that...) you especially get a gold star because the Avengers seem to have forgotten it. And didn't Jan get over her horndog phase? Didn't seem like it here. Carol also didn't seem to show any sort of battle savvy here either. She didn't do anything that showed a good sense of military tactics. Isn't that the cornerstone of what Marvel is now? A paramiltary force trained for superhuman situations. The Avengers didn't show any more battle strategy than the New Warriors did. I think people are so starved for anything that even resembles a slam bang fun adventure that this somehow managed to qualify. It's been known to happen before, like when men are in a remote mining camp and even a one eyed, toothless ninety year old lady of the evening starts to look good... well I ain't that desperate yet.

I understand the story is open to subjective analysis so no two people will see it the same. However I have yet to see anyone adequately explain (to me anyway) just how and why Ares is on the team. I don't buy the idea that this team needs a "wolverine." The Avengers have managed to fight off hundreds of threats successfully without a Wolverine type. So have the FF, Defenders etc... If its to keep an eye on him, well he has shown serious homicidal tendencies--I would think there are better reform candidates and he's so powerful that if he is against you, there won't be much you can do. Some might bring up the Vision. Well the Vision hadn't ever used lethal force against them and in a situation where the Avengers could die, he wouldn't allow it to happen. And even then they still had to have a huge team meeting where they discussed the pros and cons of it before allowing him on the team. You've already got one very sketchy candidate in Sentry, why would you double your chances of something going wrong? It just doesn't seem terribly sensible. So could someone make sense of it for me?

I wish I could. In the past, the Avengers have certainly taken in dodgy characters and some of them have managed respectable careers. But most of them already had some promise, however slight. Ares, on the other hand, is a god whose portfolio is war, which pretty much means it's hard for him to act other than evilly. The last "just war" this country fought was World War II, and you see what Marvel did to the hero of *that*. Considering the sort of people the CSA, who will eventually run the Initiative, uses, it's clear that Marvel's new direction is to pretend villains are heroes so folks can get a big dose of four color rage and violence. That's their new direction, and Ares does fit in well there.

Alright, just got my comics on Friday (the only problem with mail order). Anyway I found MA #1 to be not bad. I like the use of the thought bubbles, although badly placed in the panels.
Also, Tony, just comes off as a complete A$$, regarding Cap. Calling him rogers, oh well.
Otherwise not a bad comic. Since I don't agree the Avengers need a Wolverine, I really don't care for the reason they have Ares on this team, and to me Sentry is a waste of space, but otherwise a good team, we had a little action and that was cool.
On an amusing note, was Tony in the IM armour when it changed?
