As we head into Autumn, how have you assessed Avenging in 2006 as compared to 2005? Any early discussions on the next class of Hall of Famers?

I'll start the Hall of Fame banter:
With Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, and George Perez in, my inclination is to honor the longtime art team of John Buscema and Tom Palmer. If I'm not mistaken, Big John holds the record for most Avengers issues pencilled, and I know Palmer is past him in issues inked.
To also include a writer in the next class, I would go with Steve Englehart. He wrote the Avengers when I was but a waif, and it's those issues that I often fondly recall.

For 2005 I did vote for Englehart. I didn’t vote for Buscema or Palmer, but I did think about them. They were the Avengers art team when I first started reading the series, and their dynamic yet textured, classy look was a large part of the appeal. And as you say, their longevity with the title is worth honoring too.

Once Van gets back up and posting, and as we approach the end of the year, we need to revisit how many creators get in. Whilst I firmly believe in the names I've mentioned above, we do have the problem of no Jack Kirby and no Don Heck. Kirby of course created all of the original Avengers as well as drew the first 10 or so issues of the title, and Heck took over and sheparded the book through the first line-up change and performed quite well until the significantly more beautiful artwork of John Buscema arrived.
I remember when this first came up we debated that it ought to be difficult to get in, and we should stick to it. But there are so many wonderful contributors to the Avengers mythos!!!

I think it shouldn't be too long before Van is back... a few weeks maybe. I'd vote for Kirby. Even though I like Perez and Buscema more, Jack is the creator, he should be there...
