Just read #1. I guess it must have been co-writer Brian Reed that made all the difference, because-- holy cow-- STUFF HAPPENS!! There's actual fightin' and blowin' stuff up and.... in short, it's nothing like a Bendis comic, even though his name is on it.
I liked this story very much. A satisfying, fast-moving, single-issue adventure. And my main man is arguably the most heroic of them all. And way less "attitude" than in Bendis's version of this group, while retaining the appropriate characterizations.
Nice work. A good comic and I'll be back for #2.

Someone else enjoying a book by Bendis other than myself!?
Will wonders ever cease?

I actually thought the issue was pretty good. The only problem I have is with the title. Why is it "New Avengers - Illuminati?" The one shot was labeled the same way. I mean, there's only one member of the New Avengers involved. It could just as easily be labeled "Fantastic Four - Illuminati," "X-Men - Illuminati," or "Inhumans - Illuminati". Actually, the most appropiate thing would be "Defenders - Illuminati" since there are two members of that team involved. This isn't a complaint exactly, just a question.

What . . . WHAT!? Someone else enjoying a book by Bendis other than myself!? Will wonders ever cease? ~W~ There was one Bendis story I read that was actually good. I found the first New Avengers Annual to be very well done. There was action, adventure and even actual teamwork during an actual battle. I guess no matter how hard you try, you just can't write boring pointless stories every single time.

I enjoyed it as well. The Kree-Skrull War was my intro to comics, so it has a special place in my heart, and I was preparing myself to hate this book. But lo and behold, I actually found it to be a rousing story.
I also got a kick out of seeing the 'classic' armor Iron Man!

Sorry, guys, I don´t agree on this one with you. It seems we´ll never come to an agreement on Bendis. :-) I generelly like Bendis´ Illuminati idea, I think this is something new in MU (correct me if I´m wrong).
But what does happen in this first issue? I´d say entirely nothing at all. Yes, they are fighting the Skrulls, but come on, I too enjoy good action, but we´ve all seen this before (nice, classical art though). I had hoped for a bit more than that.
So it´s storywise the first appearance of the Illumnati and then the storys only real achievement seems to be (imho) the beginning of Skrull´s fight against the Illuminati with a hint at the end for some more. I´d say, there´s really not much happening in this issue, but I´m looking forward the next issues and hoping for something more than good drawn action alone.

I would guess that the series and one-shot have the New Avengers name because they spun out of New Avengers and share its writer—i.e., a marketing ploy more than anything else. Although the secret group includes two Defenders, there are three not-necessarily-New Avengers: Iron Man, the Sub-Mariner, and Mister Fantastic—so, maybe just Avengers - Illuminati would be a better fit than your other suggestions.

Given our recent Bendis discussions, I just wanted to point out the amazing difference in "stuff happening" between this issue (co-written by Reed) and any other Avengers issue written by Bendis alone. In other words, read the ILLUMINATI one-shot, then read this, and compare the approach of the two. If Bendis had written this one solo, the Skrulls and the Illuminati would have sat around a table, debating the situation in vague dialogue for the entire issue.
