I would say that the main obstacle for the Black Panther to really achieve the major position he so richly deserves among the main Marvel icons is his status as an "outsider"... […]On the other hand, T'Challa remains at heart a Wakandan king who doesn't even live in America …let alone New York—so, what kind of Marvel icon could he be?!?

d**n East Coast bias.....
Wasn't it revealed some time back (during Geoff John's run?) that Panther had been spying on the Avengers? I really hated that idea.
Although I loved John's work on JSA, I thought his Avengers run was unremarkable.

If I'm not mistaken, I think the actual revelation happened over the Panther's own book, but Avengers did play upon the reactions of his fellow Avengers upon learning this.

actually I think part of the problem is most big events don't include heroes like Panther as the main crux. I remember an issue of Quasar where he was looking at a number of big events in the Watcher's alternate reality viewer and he only saw one event where he played a big part. He's (well... was) the protector of the universe and I'm sure Spider Man has saved the galaxy more times in the same time span. I've had a great idea where the Panther goes on a world tour, deposes Doom and solves the Galactus problem (I swear I came up with a good explanation for both and it's so fun I don't want to give it away, but rest assured it's fully within canon and Panther doesn't exhibit any abilities other than cunning and smarts). But you need stories and big events like that to put these characters into the spotlight. Spider Man and Wolverine shouldn't save the day every time...

It does look like Panther will be getting involved with Civil War, on Cap's side evidentally. Of course, Iron Man had tried to enlist him in his Illuminati initially and he turned him down. I don't think there's any love lost between those two.

Well, back when Busiek was writing Avengers there was... well, I don't know if the word would be LOVE, but at least a great degree of mutual respect... (Sigh...!!!).

I also think that the Panther's revelation appeared in his own title, which happened at some point before Ultron Unlimited in the Avengers (in that story, Justice comments on the Panther initially joining to spy the group, receiving a strong remark by Cap and an interesting comment by Thor).
As for Peter vs Hank Pym intelligente, I think Hank has a definite edge, but Peter has a lot of potential. Problem is, his spider duties and lack of money get in the way. Hank, Reed and Banner all become heroes while in a much older age compared to Spidey, and had quite a lot of money to finance their studies and projects (or at least Reed and Hank had, not sure about Bruce).

I suppose it was short-sighted of me to write the above at the head of another longish, serious post. I’m just glad the post didn’t fulfill the “prophecy”!

Well the whole idea that the Panther joined the Avengers to spy on them doesn't make any sense, because it wasn't even his idea that he join. It was Captain America's idea. I liked some of the changes Priest did with the Panther, especially his new weapondry, but as others have said here I think the Panther has been made unlikeable. And what happened to the Panther's catlike abilities? I loved how Busiek always showed the Panther's enhanced senses and acrobatic fighting style.

I didn´t read Priest´s BP, but from what I heard he turned T´challa into some kind of African Batman, I role I don´t think has any resemblance with the character I enjoyed as a kid. And Hudlin´s BP is fanfic at its worse. Is Hudlin Quesada´s friend too (like Zimmerman, Bendis, Mack, Austen)?

Yes, I always note that every time a terrible writer comes along they are accused of being QUesada's friend.... DO DC have this kind of problem with their fans?

I don't know so much what goes on at DC. I'm sure Geoff Johns is accused in some circles and "running the joint"... which he basically is with his hand in so many projects. I would bet, though, if you happened by some DC-oriented boards that there is some post-Crisis bashing going on.
BTW, I like how this board has gradually evolved into an Avengers-first, but overall comics-tolerant discussion.

I think the big difference between someone like Johns at DC and someone like Bendis at Marvel is that Johns actually likes and respects the work that came before him.
And I too am glad we can branch out from Avengers to other subjects!

To be fair, while we seem to discuss other comics more of late, I would say "Tolerant as long as there isn't someone who loves Bendis". Because really, Id be very interested to see some massive Bendis-fans come to this board. Just for the spectacle

A blood-letting would ensue, for sure In other news, someone (sorry-- can't remember who OR where!!) mentioned the "black Thor" from the last ChicagoCon. Well, looky what I found!!!!

Yes, I always note that every time a terrible writer comes along they are accused of being QUesada's friend.... Well, the ones I listed ARE Joe Q´s friends, specially the crowd from Caliber comics (Bendis, Mack, Oeming). And to be fair Oeming is a good writer, so I´m not saying being Joe Q´s friend turns someone into a bad writer, but no way Zimmerman would ever write comic books if not for Quesada...

No, dude, our ships ain't passing....
I captured the photo off the Wizard World site. A co-worker and fellow comic geek of mine did, however, get a photo of this guy in person. He ran it in our school newspaper, of which he is the sponsor!!

Well, I knew that quite probably the Barry Manilow reference was best left unwritten, but I'm glad I went for it anyway, as it gave us the rare instance of a Night Phantom left speechless... By the way, Phantom, that's not the kind of "gag" that I was going for when I wrote those words, but I guess one takes what one can get...

You see, what you've opened up, ua2, is the perfect example for why (in another thread) I have asked for a search engine within this site. It is quite possible (probable, even) that an Avengers/Manilow fan might happen by and wonder how we are addressing issues with their favorite 70's pop icon!!

Say, I have this idea I want to run by Joe Q. : Howzabout a crossover between Marvel & American Idol... It could be called Idol War, or Secret Idols....
