In anticipation of the return of the true god of thunder, I decided to do some 'know the classics' threads here, much like the threads under our Classic Avengers topic. I hope that any and all Thor fans will contribute reviews of classic issues. Let's start at the beginning: the origin of the son of Odin! Journey Into Mystery #83 "Thor the Mighty and the Stone Men from Saturn" Just a typical day in Norway, with Stone men from Saturn landing and ruining Dr. Don Blake's vacation. Note that Thor has not started speaking in his vaguely Shakespearian dialect yet. Thor experiments with the hammer, discovering that striking the handle twice on the ground summons rain or snow, three taps dismisses the storm, and strangely, one tap reverts him to Don Blake! I guess there's some sort of built in pause after each tap... Thor easily defeats the alien invaders and their 'Mechano-Monster'. The stone men high-tail it for Saturn, leaving a triumphant Thor. There's not much to this initial story, but as an introduction to the god of thunder, we get the feeling that we are seeing a powerful new hero arise. We also get the feeling that we have read a very goofy story!

Aah... the birth of a legend.
I admit it, I can't really read JIM 83, Amazing Fantasy 15, any of the old number 1s etc, as stories on their own merits anymore. Were I to rate them, I'd just gave to give them all 10/10s. This introduced Thor and really that's all that needs to be said about it; good idea to bring "Meet the Classics" here and of course, the perfect issue to start with!

I like the title. When they bring back Thor, I hope they call it "Thor the Mighty"
I just realized I know hardly anything about early Thor. I'll look forward to reading more of these posts.

If they haven't already they will soon be releasing the Thor Comic DVD. These things are wonderful for catching up on things you hadn't read.
