I liked the Ghost. I know its obscure, but I thought he was pretty cool.

I liked Blizzard. Just reread his first appearance and he owned Iron Man till he whipped up that little portable heater gizmo. Not to criticize but you left out some of the Golden Avenger's classic villains.. Melter, Whiplash, the Controller, Midas, Firebrand... can you tell I've been reading back issues of Iron Man yet.. oops there's a typo, I started with Iran Man.

The Mandarin. Sure, in this politically correct age, using a Chinese man as the chief villain might be a little dodgy, but I don't care. The fiendish intellect, cold personality, and versatile powers make the Mandarin my choice.

Many people dislike Byrne's work, but I thought he wrote the best character portrait of the Mandarin ever. His Mandarin was bold, & majestic, and had a real impacting presence & even a certain nobility about him. Had Marvel built upon Byrne's take on him, he could have been a contender for one of the BIG villians of the MU.

Byrne did great with him. I was always surprised that he WASN'T a major bad guy player in the MU. He was ultra powerful and with those rings, boy could he accessorize.

Plus it was kinda cool that we never got to learn his original name, and thus, he remains for us forever the Mandarin & only the Mandarin.

I also prefer Mandys look later on in Iron Man. No mask, long robes. He looks very oriental regal. The earlier maskes version didn't do it for me at all.

I liked him in a suit. The rings are enough of a costume -- and I like how his mystical powers contrast with Iron Man's technology -- but wait? Are his rings really techno disguised as magic? I remember teh story where he gave Swordsman a special sword that shot lasers and stuff when special buttons were pushed.. That seems to suggest that Mandarin's power relied on technology as well.
My favorite Stark villain is Obadiah Stane, but that's just because I haven't read enough of his books. Working on it -- just haven't got there yet. But when I read that series where he fought the chess-themed villains I was in 2nd grade. Those comics probably had something to do with why I wanted to learn to play chess.

And they say comics don't teach anything worthwhile...! Yes, the Rings of Power were actually incredibly advanced technology from an alien world inhabited by sentient dragons; originally, they were used as a nearly inexaustible power source for the propulsion system of the starship which brought said dragons to Earth milennia ago. During Byrne's stint writing IM, it was shown what the rings were really capable of doing should there be a mind capable of releasing all their power at once... In this story, the Mandarin finally manages to do just that, as previously he only seemed to be able to use one ring at a time...

I really should have put Stane in there. That man did almost as much damage to Tony as any other enemy, maybe even more.

The Mandarin. Mostly because I don't really know the others, but also because I liked his appearance in V3 (pretty much the only one I've read so far).

I agree with you, Nutcase: by far, Stane was the enemy who did more damage to Tony's life.

This is a tough one. Iron Man doesn't have as good a rogue's gallery as many heroes.
I started reading with #96, leading up to the big Mandarin showdown in #100. But the Mandarin underwhelmed me. So I think my favorite IM villains, back in the day, were:
Midas Justin Hammer and don't forget ULTIMO!!

Van, I though about including Ultimo in the line-up actually. But to me he always felt like just an extension of the Mandarin.

I would have liked to see more conflict & interaction between IM & Doom... I enjoyed the 2 times (thematically linked) I can recall when they were antagonists. I mean, for 2 main Marvel characters such as they, who are both men of genius, powerful men & both clad in armors which are technological wonders, they certainly don't seem to have interacted enough through the years...

Agreed. I do remember just 3 or so years ago a very nice story though called "Standoff". Mostly Thor vs Iron Man, though Cap stepped in, but Doom manipulated things from behind the scenes and managed to increase the size of Latveria- he also basically told Tony how to build the Thorbuster armour. Very nice.

I liked the Crimson Dynamo. The suit is intimidating, threatening. Unfortunatley it didn't seem to live up to it's appearance. Titanium Man is second. I suppose I enjoy seeing the 'old-red Communists' as villians. Just like the MIG's being a rip-off of U.S. F-15's, it to me, was something the Russkies might do in real life.

I agree with you about Crimson and Titanium,... both great baddies. About the MIGs tho' we stole most of our jet designs from them originally. That was why we kept offering to pay North Korean pilots to defect in Russian jets in the Korean Wa,... excuse me Korean conflict. DLW, isn't that historical stuff? Rumor has it you may know some history.

Thus far the Knaufs have made Mandy very spooky.
I mean, no hands but the rings forged to his spine?
Eery.
And yet...
...awesome.

And yes, I'm a history teacher, but I am much more interested in political and social history as opposed to military history. So if you want a discussion on weapons and/or tactics, I'm not your resource...
