I guess it was inevitable. Brubaker has reinvigorated Crossbones, Sin and the Red Skull, he has recently reintroduced Doctor Faustus and Armin Zola, he has made use of A.I.M. and Hydra, and he has quietly killed off Mother Night. Now we see yet another of the old rogues gallery updated for Cap volume 5, and I have no reason to doubt that Brubaker will do it tremendously once more. "CAPTAIN AMERICA #28 Written by ED BRUBAKER Pencils by STEVE EPTING & MIKE PERKINS Cover by STEVE EPTING Meet the New Serpent Squad, their leader -- Sin, the daughter of the Red Skull! And now as the world still reels from the tragic assassination of Captain America, the Skull and his minions begin to put their plans into motion, to deadly effect! And as the Falcon and Nick Fury hunt for the Winter Soldier, new director of S.H.I.E.L.D., Tony Stark, gets a message from beyond the grave... 32 PGS./Rated T+ ?$2.99" I do believe that's the most male Serpent Society I can remember!

Didn't previous incarnations have a whole lot more members? You may not be seeing all of them on this cover. Also, didn't Diamondback, Black Mamba, and Asp (three of the women) form some quasi-legal group awhile back?

Didn't previous incarnations have a whole lot more members? I believe the original Serpent Squad (forerunner to the Serpent Society) was a quartet. B.A.D. Girls, Inc., from their codenames’ initials.
Who are the members depicted? On the right, we seem to have King Cobra. The costume on the person to the lower left isn’t entirely familiar to me, but it does remind me of the Eel—perhaps this is some incarnation or other. I know—eels are fishes, not snakes, but the original Eel was in the Serpent Squad. I don’t have a guess as to who’s at the upper left. Front and center is Sin, who seems to utterly lack a serpent motif. Maybe, if she calls herself Original Sin, that will be serpentine enough.

As Night Phantom mentions, the Squad is different from the Society. There were also 3 different Squads. A) Cobra, Eel, and Viper. B) Cobra, Eel, Princess Python, and Viper. Neither a) nor b) had much of anything to do with the later Serpent Society. Eel is currently dead according to Marvel Index. C) Anaconda, Black Mamba, Death Adder, Sidewinder. This Squad led more of less directly to the Society. I don't think this is the one that will be making an appearance in the Cap title, because it would probably lead into an appearance by Diamondback. Mr. Brubaker has said more than once that he can't stand Diamondback, so don't count on seeing her any time soon, if ever.

Also, I'm thinking the guy in the upper left might just be Puff Adder with a new costume.

I apolgoize, my mistake it's the Serpent Squad then.
However I recently read an interview where Brubaker mentioned there's a possibility of a Diamondback appearance... here we are:
"I?ve got a soft spot for Diamondback, any chance of seeing her and the BAD Girls the pages of your Captain America?
Yea, there?s a chance. But I don?t have a soft spot for Diamondback."
So if nothing else RSC, there's a chance there- I know you love the character!

Also, I'm thinking the guy in the upper left might just be Puff Adder with a new costume. But the guy in the image looks so small!

You're right, and on closer inspection, those are wrist blasters on his arms of some type. What about Bushmaster? Last time I remember seeing him, didn't he get ripped in half? Maybe this is a new construct for his body and those claw spikes of his may be retractable.

What I should point out is that on several prior occasions he was rather less charitable and made it fairly clear that he actively dislikes the character -- which is fine, but probably wouldn't make for a very sympathetic portrayal. It's certainly possible he's changed his mind since then at least on whether to utilize the character in the future, particularly in regard to filling in all the time he has to kill in the next couple of years. While I would love to see her utilized again, I'm not particularly interested in seeing Cap/DB rehashed for the same reasons I'm uninterested in seeing Cap/Sharon rehashed for the third time. RSC

Just saw the cover image. Strange lineup. Cobra makes sense. Syn with no snake affiliation at all? The guy on the lower left looks like "Easter-Egg Man." I can't even begin to guess who he is. I was mistaken in thinking the guy on the upper left might be Puff Adder. In fact, the mask bears a resemblance to Death Adder. The rest of the costume reminds me of the Constrictor, namely the ribbed chest protection and the wrist-shooters. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constrictor_%28comics%29Plus "Constrictor" even sounds less lame than "Death Adder." I confess it's more than a little strange to see a "Gruenwaldian" superhero-y cover on a book that's gone in a totally different direction than Gruenwald's book. RSC
