Just out of pure interest, what do you guys think are the best stories ever to feature Marvel's First Villain? (And best character IMO ) I thought it would be interesting to see the responses, so here's a little thing I came up with: Best Classic Story (In-FF)Best Modern Story (In-FF)Best Mini-Series (Starring the good Doctor of course)Best Classic Era Appearance (OUTSIDE FF)Best Modern Era Appearance (OUTSIDE FF)Just thought some fans could give me their own feedback. For myself, it's: Best Classic Story (In-FF) The Peril and the Power- Fantastic Four 57-60. Doctor Doom gains the power of the Silver Surfer and lays the smackdown on absoloutely everybody. Best Modern Story (In-FF) Unthinkable- Fantastic Four #497-#500. Doctor Doom at his arrogant best, bargaining with demons and defeating and imprisoning the FF! Best Mini-Series (Starring the good Doctor of course) 'Books of Doom' by Ed Brubaker. Only recent, but a fantastic account of Doom's origin, making him sympathetic. Best Classic Era Appearance (OUTSIDE FF) Secret Wars, where he stole the power of the Beyonder! Another amazing Doom-smackdown story. Best Modern Era Appearance (OUTSIDE FF) Very tricky. I have a suspicion I'll be changing this as Civil War rages on, but for now Iron Man #64, (story began in Thor '58 and ends in Avengers #63) in which Doom basically helps advise Tony but does it in his own extremely in-character way. Great appearance. So, everyone. What were my best appearances? Be warned- Doom is watching!

For some of those groups I still have too much to read. For the moment though, I say
Best Classic Era Appearance (OUTSIDE FF) : Secret Wars, he really looked above everyone else in there, challenging even the Beyonder and absorbing his power (and Galactus').
Best Mini-Series (Starring the good Doctor of course): It's a tie between 2 graphic novels: Emperor Doom, where we see what he really is capable of, not as villain but as world leader, with both his strengths and weaknesses, and "Triumph and Torment", which is more about the human side of the good doctor.

I've always wanted to lay my hands on "Emperor Doom", as I have many of the old Marvel graphic novels, but I understand that it's extremely hard to find a copy.

For the Classic FF, I would go with the arc (before we called them that!) that ran through FF #192-200, where Reed is depowered, the FF break up, and the story heads into a "son of Doom" story where Doom has cloned himself, trots the clone out as his son and heir, and the FF head to Latveria for the battle royale. The final conflict between Doom and a now re-powered Reed is excellent, culminating in Reed wrenching Doom's faceplate off his head and forcing him to gaze at his visage in a multi-faceted crystal room.
The aforementioned Doom/Surfer story is excellent as well.

You should still try to find it on paper, because it's much nicer to read, but, in the meantime, this could help you to fill that gap: www.drstrange.nl/drstrange/comics/cbr/Emperor%20Doom.cbr

Wow, great idea. I have always loved Doom...the one villain who (at least way back when) you could respect and who even had an honorable side to him. I am at work and don't have access to my books, but I remember that F4 115-116 ( I believe) had a great story where Reed has been taken over by the Overmind, and Sue turns to Doom for help. He rants a bit and turns her down, and as she is about to leave, she says something about him being petty. Doom responds with, "Petty? Doom is many things...but he is not petty." He then proceeds to help out the rest of the FF, leading them against the Overmind. Doom gets pretty beat up but saves the day. I always liked this story because it gave me the feeling that if things had just been slightly different in his life, Doom could have been a great hero.
And I think that is part of the reason he is such an enduring character.
And also why I absolutely hated how they handled him in that awful F4 movie.

I too love all the things you guys mentioned: Secret Wars, Books of Doom, Unthinkable...
Another one that sometimes slips by people is the Fantastic Four vs. the X-Men. Doom is almost behind the scenes to the real conflict, as he gets less screen time than all the heroes, but in fact it's DOOM'S manipulations and scheming that causes all this conflict. It's this little tiny sublte thing that Doom does, but it nearly makes Richards come undone. A very insidious Doom.

I think my favorite Dr. Doom story was the one in SUPER-VILLAIN TEAM-UP, where he fought the Red Skull to the death, on the surface of the Moon. I won't give away what happens, since it's recently been released in the ESSENTIAL SVTU book. But rest assured, there is much Doom posturing, barking at subordinates, and talking down even to the Red Skull. That's the Doom I love. "Bah!"

I have to add the Fantastic Four Special by Dwayne McDuffie from just- last year or early this year?- which I recently purchased from Ebay.
The whole issue really revolves around Reed and Doom, with no fighting. Doom is written brilliantly- honour intact! They continue the chess game they were playing on the day Doom was scarred. (obviously, being geniuses, they don't need a board or anything. They can remember it exactly and simply give the co-ordinates to move their pieces) After a great conversation, Reed gets checkmate. Doom simply says "Damnation. I.... concede." No death ray, no sudden attack, he honourably concedes. LOTS of honour etc in this issue. Great story- the Reed/Doom relationship is embedded so strongly I can't waut fir McDuffie to take over FF!

I see it´s high time I read Emperor Doom.
But for now I´m taking up the cudgels for Byrne:
Best Classic Story (In-FF) FF #258 - the one FF story without any member of Marvels First Family (but two Avengers appear - Cap and IM, plus Kristoff von Doom and Terrax/Tyros - that´s the whole cast). When I first read the story I simply loved it - Doom´s at his best, imperiously, arrogant but also caring for Kristoff.

Yes, and it's every bit as good as I expected it to be... I'm torn between this graphic novel & the Books of Doom mini as the Good Doctor's best characterization but, in truth, there's so many good stories to choose from when it comes to the Big Double D, especially, I think, from among the early ones, and that's why he's undisputably Marvel's most prominent baddie.

how did I miss this post? My favorite Dr. Doom story is actually Doom 2099 issues #1 - 35? "In the year 2099, Doom appeared in the ruins of Castle Doom in Latveria, after disappearing 50-100 years before. Latveria was now in the hands of a cyborg, Tyger Wylde. Doom was able to defeat Wylde and gain control of his home nation. Doom decided that the world has become chaotic and corrupt and to save it, he had to conquer it. Several weeks later, Doom conquered the country, Myridia. Doom conquered the United States in issue #29 and he left Fortune as regent behind in Latveria. As president, Doom fought against Alchemax, the Pixel Corporation and the other corporations who controlled all aspects of every day life in 2099. Doom recreated S.H.I.E.L.D., assigning Junkpile to take down the Red Market (illegal trade in humans for experimentation). He also made the X-Men 2099 the law enforcers of Halo City, a place where mutants and humans could live in peace." wiki [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_2099 ] It was crazy to see a super villain finally conquer the world, I mean, they always talk about it, but here it happened, and spread out into the whole 2099 line. unfortunately, the whole 2099 line imploded shortly after that and all the stories were pushed into one book and rushed to sloppy endings. too bad. still, my favorite Doom story of all time (so far)

It also spawned titles like Punisher 2099, Agent of SHIELD, a very Judge Dreddish feeling book with the Punisher chasing down bad guys in the futuristic mega-city. Also, I can't remember how, but it seems like the cyber Ghost Rider 2099 was somehow involved...

The best Dr Doom story of all time is when he tries to use his LEGO device on Reed Richards. Richards points out that it is facing the wrong way. Doom of course will not be fooled and fires the weapon, promptly turning his own head into a giant smile face.

ya all of 2099 died together, I only ever read the spiderman 2099, but it was kinda fun stuff all things considered. At the end the Doom 2099 story ran through Spidey towards the end.
Thats what I like about Doom, any time he's in a situation or a world where here are only a few people to stop him, he pretty much takes over that world. If you don't have a minimum 2-3 superhero teams in play at a given time, say hello to the new King of the world.

I liked the 2099 stuff, but is there any artwork worse than what Doom 2099 churned out at the end?
That was crapalicious
