I know this is for "Avengers-Related Comics," but is there any chance we can start up a thread about independant/non-Marvel/non-mainstream books?
There are some great indy graphic novels out there. "Blankets," "Unlikely," and "Flight" are just amazing works.

I have ordered the 9-11 Commission Report graphic novel, which received excellent reviews in both the Chicago Tribune and USA Today. Art is by Ernie Colon, of 70's DC fame. I will post a review after I have read it. If you've never read Art Spiegelman's Holocaust graphic novel Maus, you are terribly missing out on an excellent piece of literature . One of these days I plan to buy Will Eisner's Contract With God trilogy, available in hardcover. I have also read Eisner's last graphic novel, The Plot, about the Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. That book was written by the Russian secret service in the late 1800's as if it were a plot by the Jews of the world to take over. It was proven in the 1920's to be a plagiarism of a French satire about Louis Napoleon. Still, the book was believed to be true, and was used by Hitler as propaganda during his rise to power and after. The Protocols continues to be the second best selling book in the Middle East, behind the Koran. Eisner does a marvelous job at showing the conception of the Protocols and its living history to the present day. And if you've never read a Bone graphic novel, you should!

I've read "Bone" and it is a fantastic read. Really great stuff.
I've read a bit of "Maus," but not the whole thing.
Let me know how the 9-11 Commission Report is. I'm kinda undecided about it.

dlw66 has great taste in books, eespecially mentioning will eisner, someone todays comic fans should know more about. maus was ranked by wizard magazine as the #1 graphic novel of all time. i dont know if its indy or not but "cages" by dave mckean is great and so is "blacksad" by guardino (both i just mentioned in another post ). if youre into political stuff, joe sacco is your man with his palestinian narratives and the art is kinda like robert crumb. i am also a huge reader of omaha the cat dancer by reed waller and the late kate worley. the series is almost finishing up now (adults only tho for that one).

For a real-world non-ficition comic, try Pyongyang. I have yet to see any media cover the reality of North Korea in such a way, not even in a documentary.

Just recently ordered a copy of Eisner's Contract with God omnibus edition. It's quite good. I got it cheap thru the sci-fi book club

it was really cool. Eisner pours his heart and soul into each page! It's a glowing loveletter to his childhood memories and to ol NYC herself. I have ordered the new omnibus of NEW YORK thru the sci fi book club and can't wait to get my hands on it!
