I told you I'd check out this book one more time and give an opinion, so here goes.
First off, I don't think I'll be sticking around for issue #3. That's not a total knock on this book -- visually it's pretty good, but the all-ages writing and lack of character development make it an easy drop. The coloring is good though, too.
Issue #2 features a battle royale largely featuring the Hulk and Spider-Man versus the Leader and the Abomination. Hmmm... seems like it would have been better in "Marvel Adventures Marvel Team-Up" if there were such a magazine. The Avengers are featured in the beginning fighting "mutated" sea creatures (part of the Leader's plot to caputure and kill the Hulk), and then at the end as the cavalry. As stated above, character development is virtually nil. We still don't know who Giant Girl is, and Storm has maybe two lines in the whole story. Wolverine has a good scene towards the end, but the Hulk continues to seem out of place with this team.
In regard to the Hulk, Leader, and Abomination -- I was not a huge reader of the Hulk during the Herb Trimpe years, but I don't seem to recall that the Leader and the Abomination were wise-cracking types of guys. They are played as such here. Strange characterization... The Hulk is the dumb version from the 70's and serves as power only.
Spidey and Wolverine continue to be in this book, much like they appear in New Avengers, for marketing purposes only. They don't play well with the other heroes; same goes for Storm. Giant Girl could be interesting, but she does nothing other than walk around at her seemingly 25-foot height. Cap and Iron Man are certainly recognizable (Cap has a good line about not taking lives to Wolverine when they are fighting the giant sea creatures), and Iron Man does some techy talking, etc.
So, if you have young kids (8-10?) who might like the pretty pictures and just appreciate some good ol' comics violence, then this book is worth a look. If you're like me and hoped that this would fill a void until our current Avengers mess is cleared up, then I'm afraid you'll have to keep looking .
