A complete and utter load of faeces.
This is even worse than BENDIS! output. I do not like Warren Ellis (or his writing) and cannot understand why he is so popular (although I can understand that his popularity is what gets him jobs).
Crap like this, however, I can't abide:
That could POTENTIALLY be funny. But when taken in context with the rest of the issue, it is just crap. And it gets worse - I just couldn't be bothered firing up my scanner again.
Oh, and for those who are a little challenged, "The Captain" is calling himself "Captain F * U * C * K". This is easily determined by comparing the symbols used in his dialogue to those used in the word "motherf*u*c*ker" in the "Nextwave" theme song - download it (http://www.marvel.com/nextwave/), read the lyrics on the last page, and then try to tell me I'm wrong.
I'm actually a little sickened that crap this crappy can be crapped near me. Crap.
This makes BENDIS! look awesome.
If you read beyond the page shown above, you can see how little Warren Ellis knows about what he is doing. Monica Rambeau's personality is the opposite of how it has been shown in the past and hey, looks like there will be another throwdown with Genis-Vell - she's stolen his codename AGAIN! (You know, with all the time she has in-between her mother dying, leaving her very ill father to run their boating business on his own, getting a job for an organisation that any semi-literate moron can tell is a terrorist group and boasting about her time "running the Avengers". Not that she ever did that. She was their CHAIRPERSON, not their Fuhrer.)
Poor Machine Man; his software has become corrupted. Awww.
And Tabitha Smith. She got better. Wow.
Grrrr. GRRRRR!
- Adrian
P.S. - My chest hurt while I typed that, you know.

I mean, God, she had a proper job before and after her full-time tenure as Captain Marvel. Jesus.

Adrian-- I think it's the other way around, with Monica and Genis. He's stolen her name, twice in a row, now. She was Captain Marvel before him, and was Photon before him.
The two of them sat down in a bar and addressed the issue in THUNDERBOLTS a couple of months ago, in fact, in a pretty humorous scene, with him trying to help her think of a new name to replace him taking "Photon."

That's what I was addressing, Van. SHEESH. I am saying that for Monica to be calling herself Photon NOW, she must have stolen it BACK from Genis after their meeting in T-Bolts. ie. Genis took Cap Marvel from Monica Monica became Photon Genis took Photon from Monica Monica became Pulsar Monica is all-of-a-sudden Photon again (she must have stolen it from Genis) EDIT: Oops, hang on - I said she stole it "AGAIN!". The AGAIN! should not be there. She's only stolen one name. - Adrian

What's with all the hate, Adrian? I think you're taking this all too seriously . . .
I love "Nextwave." It's intended to be funny and light-hearted.
Can't you just enjoy something? I've seen nothing but negativity from you.

I've seen nothing but negativity from you. ~W~ This comic is not funny, nor is it light hearted in my opinion, it is just a poor jab at super hero comics written by a man, who has gone on record as saying he hates traditional super hero comics. The sales are not good, and I doubt it will last long.

Are you sure you're not confusing Warren Ellis with Garth Ennis?
Ennis hates super-heroes. Ellis likes them.
Stop reading it if you don't like it. And stop complaining about it.

Ellis said he hated tradicional superheros books, and NEXTWAVE isn´t a tradicional superhero book, quite the opposite.
I liked Monica back in Stern´s Avengers run and am not offended with her participation in this book at all. Ellis didn´t turned her into a clown or anything, and is better a book that´s funny and light hearted than stupidity pretending to be cool and hip (like many other Marvel books).

Not to be jumping on W or anything, but a couple of quick replies:
I, too, have seen Ellis say that he hates writing standard super heroes. And I pretty much hate reading his work when he condescends to write them. ;D But I did read OCEAN today, and thought it was quite entertaining. It's sort of a combination of 2001 and James P. Hogan's "Giants Trilogy." Fun stuff.
With all due respect, I could not disagree with this approach more. I like certain characters, universes, storylines, etc. Occasionally those things are handed over to someone whose work I dislike immensely. When that happens, I complain. Does anyone listen? I dunno. But it beats being quiet and letting the powers-that-be think everyone uniformly approves of it all...

I'm a big Warren Ellis fan. Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate Extinction, The Authority, and even Planetary have been enough to make me enjoy his stories. I enjoy Nextwave. No one else was using these characters, so he dragged them out and put them to good use. If you don't like it, I wouldn't worry too much about. Someone sometime down the line with retcon it. I understand and respect that POV. Really, up until recently I was like that too. And then Chuck Austen starting writing X-Men . . . Anyways, I really like Nextwave. It's off-the-wall fun and adventure. And it sold-out of its first printing, so I guess I'm not the only one. ~W~

If you enjoy the comic that is great, but I find it to be very low brow humour, with poor charaterzation all around. Also, I find the art horrible.

To be completely honest, other than Tabitha (and just a very little bit Monica and Aaron here and there), I've never had a whole lot of exposure to these characters, so I can't really judge that. Tabitha is in character, though. I love the art. I think it fits the stories perfectly. Very cartoony and fun. My only complaints is that I wish it was a little more serious. The humor angle is great, but it's missing the subtly that Ellis that "The Authority" issues had. And I also didn't like that Fin Fang Foom died (which can almost be garunteed a retcon). As for low-brow humor . . . Dirk Anger didn't crack you up? I loved his crazy rant about loving H.A.T.E.! It was just so ridiculas! I honestly think that you guys should give it another try. Ellis hasn't turned anyone into a killer or rapist or bad guy nor has he transformed them into unlikeable entities. They're still heroes. Dirk Anger is my new hero, though. Man, I love that guy! ~W~

As for Dirk Anger he is a Saturday Night Live parady of Nick Fury, sorry I don't see this comic as funny, I see it as Ellis's little joke. He is insulting traditional super hero comics and laugh as the fans eat it up.

Monica, is vastly out of charater, she has never been the anger black woman. I'll concede that point since you probably know the character better than I. WHAAAA--?! How in the world is he insulting traditional super hero comics? Granted, it is not a traditional super hero book, but it's not an insult. It doesn't make it super heroes look bad or cheesey or stupid. If anything, it makes these super heroes look cool, hip, and witty. And I'm certain he's not in an office laughing at his evil scheme to make super heroes (his bread and butter at the moment for Marvel) look bad. ~W~

Wow, just wow, that comic is about as cool and witty as my wifes father, who still thinks he is back in the 50's. Keep buying into it. With its current sales, it will be canceled by issue 6.

Surely, SURELY, I'm not the only one who likes this book.
Is there anyone here who is likes "Nextwave?" Anyone else who will stand up for it with me?
. . .
Ugh. It's like "Arrested Development" all over again.
I'm about ten minutes away from never posting or coming to this site again.

Will I agree the book is not for everyone, it is not jsut purists that don't like it. I love comedy books, She-Hulk is great, so is the Thing. Nextwave to me is slap stick comedy, along the lines of South Park.

To the one or two other people reading this book, did anyone pick up issue 4? I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a comic as I did when they showed The Captain's origin!
I felt kinda bad for the cop at the end, though, despite getting what he deserved. Tabby and X-51 kicking him was pretty funny.
Dirk Anger wasn't as funny this time, but hopefully, next issue . . .
