I understand the anti-Bendis stance, but I really think Alan Davis must be providing some of the writing too. Either that or Bendis has been possessed by some sort of spirit, at times it doesn't read like him at all. Even if solely for the art, I would recommend this mini.

Do you think he was being serious? his smile is such that I'm not sure he is trying to relieve the tension or really means it. I suppose it depends on whether he was in a relationship at that time in his own book or not.

Yep, yep, yep-- this is why this artist makes such a difference. I think that Thor (a guy who NEVER jokes!) was indeed making a subtle wry comment as depicted by Alan Davis. And it all hinges on that particular smile and the particular facial expressions to convey that. The comment itself? If you look at it strictly as text, it's pure Bendis "look how edgy I am by using the characters in new, inappropriate ways"-- I don't think he wrote it wry, but I do think Davis drew it that way, and added considerable depth to the character in the act. Does Davis write as well? The script is not bad at all, as many of us have noted. That would certainly make a bit more sense-- if he had a heavier hand in the words as well as drawing the pictures.

In admit I only bought this for Davis' art....only read the first issue, as my LCS forgot to send me #2 and I hate reading my comics out of order.
1st issue wasn't that bad though.....

Sweet Fancy Moses---- remember our dog above in this thread, the one who ate my Avengers Prime #1??
It's very likely that she had a part in PULLING OVER our 10', ornament-laden (we're talking hundreds) Christmas tree yesterday afternoon. First my comic books, and now my christmas??? And I LOVE this idiot canine! She's hopelessly attached to & besotted w/ me! Let me say, I have never witnessed a scene of yuletide disaster as awaited in the living room last night. Wife of HB was standing in the foyer w/ a cocked eyebrow, pointing a finger w/ firm resolve off to her right. The sight that my gaze traveled to was not a pretty one, to say the least. Said she hadn't heard anything, but that the dog had been acting absurdly guilty for an hour or so. . .
Oy--
